Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The function is to keep a sustainable, safe, and aesthetic exterior landscape environment to enhance the structural building and facilities of the state property and the educational environment for the constituents of GCSU.

Primary Purpose of Position

Groundskeeper I is an entry level labor position. Groundskeeper I employees utilize basic motorized equipment ( ie: mowers, weed eaters, edgers, blowers, etc.). Skills are entry-level and basic (strawing, watering, weeding, trash pickup, etc.). Knowledge areas are basic information such as general recognition and knowledge of a few basic plants and chemicals; approximately 25 basic plants and 5 basic chemical applications. Work is assigned on a task-by-task basis and closely supervised. As experience is gained, employees may be assigned more difficult tasks with a list of assignments for the day.

Operation of motorized equipment such as trucks, golf carts, push mowers, riding zero turn mowers, handheld blowers, backpack blower, weedeaters, edgers, vacuums, aerators, rototillers, feeding a chipper, drag matting and other similar types of equipment.

Key Function Maintenance
Job duties performed for the above function

Perform unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor for basic, entry-level tasks in an outdoor environment during all seasons. Tasks include: digging, planting, raking, fueling equipment, mulching (pine straw or bark chips), weeding, laying sod, loading debris, hauling with wheelbarrows dirt/rock, picking up trash, hauling off debris, backpack spraying, watering, seeding, shoveling ice/snow, fertilizing, and other related items.

Knowledge areas are basic information such as general recognition and knowledge of a few basic plants and chemicals; approximately 25 basic plants and 5 basic chemical applications. Employees must learn the task associated with a particular shrub and how that task is accomplished for that plant. Knowledge of backpack spraying, using a 4 gallon sprayer of minimal pressure on fire ant mounds, wasp/hornet spray, some roundup spraying of weeds in beds. Pruning practices for particular shrubs and being able to identify the shrub.

Communication is basic, simple, and monosyllabic. Usually information exchanging at this level occurs within that day/week. Instructions are received daily/throughout day/weekly. It is either verbal or written. Reciprocation can occur throughout the day on Walkie Talkie, in person, over e-mails, or written. There are simple logs of reporting or recording info needed (bales of pine straw spread that day or around that bldg.; how many places watered). Occasional information and assignments are communicated on computerized systems such as e-mails, online trainings, timecards, or benefits information.

Safety – Operates equipment and performs labor under adverse working conditions, outdoor environment, and varying terrains. Employees also work in heat, cold, wind, rain, and inclement weather. Employees must follow safety standards that apply to the weather as well as the equipment. (ie: metal equipment gets hot, fuel is flammable, so precautions must be taken). Must aware of safety issues and follow a small, basic level of safety standards for all equipment and situations trained on (using hearing protection, safety goggles, equipment safety, heat exhaustion, slippery slopes). Must practice safety standards as required and trained to minimize risk of injury to self and others.

Proposed Minimum Experience/Education

Highschool Diploma or equivalent: Valid drivers license. Stable work history of a minimum of 12 months, prefer grounds related experience.

Valid Driver’s License, Ability to utiize Golf Carts/ Trucks/Vehicles and complete annual compliance training and annual motor vehicle compliance.

Prefer grounds related experience of one year. Prefer prior grounds maintenance experience with commercial company handling grounds maintenance and/or landscaping, golf course, plant nursery, or similar outdoor experiences, farming, etc.
