The schedule is primarily Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm; however, some after-hours or weekend hours are expected for programming or to respond to mental health emergencies.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

Counseling Services provides short-term professional counseling and psychiatric services to GC students to promote student success and academic retention.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Assistant Director provides direct counseling services to students, administrative supervision for the department, consultation to colleagues, and clinical supervision of trainees.

Provide individual, group and/or couples counseling to students to address personal, academic and career concerns, engage in crisis intervention to address mental health emergencies, and maintain appropriate documentation.

Develops and leads structured groups, workshops, presentations, and other prevention and psychoeducational outreach programming.

Assumes administration duties of Counseling Services as assigned by the director.

Job duties performed for the above function

Provide clinical supervision for trainees and/or staff working toward obtaining full licensure. Provide consultation regarding clinical issues to all Counseling Services staff. Supervision duties may include reviewing case notes or recordings of sessions, meeting regularly with supervisees to evaluation clinical issues and professional judgment, maintaining appropriate documentation, evaluating clinicians professional skills for training programs and/or licensing boards.

Work individually and on committees with faculty or staff, and external agencies for the benefit of students and the institution. Determines the most appropriate and needed areas of focus to benefit students and the institution, and seeks opportunities to become involved in those areas.

Consults with faculty, staff and other off campus constituents (e.g., parents, mental health professionals, physicians, etc.) about the developmental and mental health needs of students. Develops and updates knowledge of professional policies associated with the consultation process. Maintains current knowledge of local resources, and avenues to seek assistance in understanding other resources that could benefit students. Consults as requested and appropriate to help others understand and take advantage of resources to assist students.

Minimum Requirements

Proposed Minimum Experience/Education

Master’s Degree in Mental Health Discipline; Licensure in a mental health discipline in Georgia, or ability to obtain licensure within three months of hire AND at least three years of experience in a mental health setting.

Department Required Skills

Familiarity with electronic medical records and scheduling systems, preferably Titanium Scheduled.

Familiarity with Career Assessment instruments, preferably the Strong Interest and Skill Survey, Campbell interest and Skill Survey, and Myers Briggs.

List any other requirements

Ability to respond to mental health emergencies outside of normal office hours.

Preferences

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Doctorate in Mental Health Discipline; Licensure as a psychologist in Georgia, or ability to obtain licensure within three months of hire. Three or more years of experience in a college counseling setting. Three or more years of experiences in a position providing administrative supervision. Three of more years providing clinical supervision.
